Joggins Fossil Institute nominated for Sustainable Tourism Award

September 29th, 2010

The Joggins Fossil Institute (JFI) is one of three finalists for the Parks Canada Sustainable Tourism Award. The award is given to the finalist that best demonstrates that, through their operations, they protect and enhance Canada's natural and cultural heritage and are consistent with the surrounding community and environment.

This prestigious award is part of the National Awards for Tourism Excellence, presented by The Toronto Star. The awards have been presented since 2003 by the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) to recognize the best of Canada’s tourism industry. There are 14 award categories spanning the entire spectrum of the most important aspects of the tourism industry in Canada. TIAC is the only national organization representing the full scope of Canada’s $70 Billion tourism industry.

“It is very exciting to be recognized for sustainable development. It is something we feel very strongly about here at the Joggins Fossil Cliffs UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fact that we have reached the finals on a national level for something we work so hard to promote is very rewarding”, Joggins Fossil Institute Acting Operations Coordinator Jordan LeBlanc says of the nomination.

The JFI is pleased to be in the running with the best of the sustainable tourism operators and attractions. The three finalists share an admiration for Canada’s cultural and natural heritage. They also display leadership in the tourism industry in cooperating with others to promote the significance of the environment to the tourism industry and public.

The winners will be announced at the award ceremony in Gatineau, Quebec on November 2, 2010 as part of The Tourism Summit, TIAC’s annual national tourism policy conference. A member of the JFI team will be sent to represent the Institute.
