Melanie Cookson-Carter
Operations Coordinator
Melanie Cookson-Carter immigrated to Nova Scotia with her family in December 2007.
Prior to moving to Canada, Melanie was Senior Manager of Tourism and Visitor Services for Wyre Borough Council, a large municipality in North West England. Melanie’s role with Wyre was primarily involved in developing tourism infrastructure including; destination management, urban regeneration, rural diversification, the market town initiative, assisting in policy development for SSSIs (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) and AONBs (Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty). Melanie also has first hand experience in the provision of business development advice, managing visitor information centres, an 18th century Windmill and an Ecology Park and Visitor Centre in Lancashire.
As a mentor for tourism management students and spokesperson for tourism in Lancashire, Melanie has worked briefly in Holland, Germany, Northern Ireland and throughout Northern England.
Having a passion for history, travel and conservation, Melanie has travelled considerably, visiting over thirty five World Heritage Sites and has been able to witness first-hand what does and what does not work from a visitor perspective. It was this experience, which brought her to Joggins to take the position of Operations Coordinator for the Joggins Fossil Institute.
Since assuming the role at the Joggins Fossil Cliffs, Melanie has become a panellist for the National Geographic Sustainable Tourism Panel, Review Panellist for the National Occupational Standards for Heritage Interpreters, Tourism Mentor for TIANS, Board member of the Bay of Fundy Tourism Partnership, Chair of the Fundy Shore Tourism Destination Area and has delivered workshops and training for local tourism operators.
Melanie studied Heritage Management at the University of Central Lancashire and will continue her professional development here in Canada.
In her spare time, Melanie loves to read, travel and visit galleries and museums.
